@Ember421 @antunes_morgado The study I cited in the report argued that short and medium haul flights (15 % of all flights) could be profitably electrified with 800 Wh/kg batteries (actual, not effective density). 80 % of all flights could be electrified

@geirlol Med 4x ganger høyere energitetthet på batteriene vil man kunne elektrifisere nesten alle flyavganger i verden med rekkevidde på opptil 1111 kilometer. https://t.co/bEw7vCoQOu
@HACAN1 @cutnoise Here is our paper providing a first-order assessment of the energy, economic and environmental (including noise) implications of all-electric aircraft. The main issue today is battery technology. https://t.co/jZ5JELb02X

"A global fleet of all-electric aircraft serving all flights up to a distance of 400–600 nautical miles (741–1,111 km) would demand an equivalent of 0.6–1.7% of worldwide electricity consumption in 2015."
@anders_gustavo @ToughSf @elonmusk Short haul flights account for a surprisingly small proportion of aviation's emissions. Schafer et al (2018) found half of all departures are for flights up to about 1000km but this only accounts for 15% of aviation GHG.
@Ninja “A global fleet of all-electric aircraft serving all flights up to a distance of 400–600 nautical miles (741–1,111 km)” is possible. https://t.co/X1aZ3eqeNO The article is behind a paywall but plenty materials (presentation) exist on the web.

@Rautainen Sähköisen lentämisen potentiaalia on tutkittu Nature Energy:ssä. Jos kantama olisi 600 mailia (~1100 km), voitaisiin sähköistämällä poistaa noin 20 % lentoliikenteessä (2015 tilanne) käytetystä polttoaineesta. Eli tarvitaan #P2X ja/tai kulutukse

This seems like a big deal anyway: If medium-haul flights can be electrified, we need way less synthetic fuels for the remainder. Also, many long-haul flights could be transformed into two medium-haul flights.

Batteries need to get 3x more energy dense to decarbonise flights up to 1,000 km. Within 2050 by current trends. But that would be barely half of aviation emissions. 10x for total decarbonisation. Lots of space here for bio and electrofuels.
